Fish migration

Most fish use their habitat dynamically. They migrate seasonally within the main channel or move up into side channels. Fish migrate to find improved conditions

  • for reproduction
  • for nutrition and growth
  • for overwintering
  • for evading harmful influences

In Swiss running waters, fish migration is possible only to a limited extent. Many obstacles render migration impossible. Immense effort is currently invested in attempts to bypass artificial barriers (fish ladders, bypass channels, block ramps). We are conducting research to identify the migration requirements of fish, focusing particularly on the effects of fish barriers and their elimination.
